Dr Penny Abbott is Head of the Human Resource Research Initiative of SABPP. Penny has had a long and successful career at executive level in Human Resource Management across a spread of South African companies, in industries ranging from food and pharmaceuticals to mining and cement. In 2002 she took up a position as Senior Vice President, Human Resources, with Holcim Limited, based in Switzerland, covering global human resource management across the company’s operations in 70 countries with over 70 000 employees. Returning home to South Africa in 2007, she combined consulting work in her South African franchise from Clutterbuck Associates (the leading mentoring and coaching consultancy from the UK) with studying for and completing her M Phil in Human Resource Development at the University of Johannesburg. She also completed her doctoral research at UJ on the socio-economic impact of HR. Penny has been a Chartered HR Practitioner since 1985, was elected a Mentor of the SABPP in 2006 and a Master HR Practitioner in 2009. She has co-authored a book, published in 2010, A Guide for Coachees, and is a regular contributor of conference presentations and journal articles on a variety of subjects.
As Head of Research at SABPP, Penny represented the HR Profession in Parliament, and a played a leading role in the development of the National HR Competency Model, as well as the National HR Standards.
